Police in Beitbridge have dismantled a dr¥gs trafficking syndicate and recovered approximately 200 kilogrammes of dagga during an operation targeting illegal substances in Matabeleland South province.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrests, saying both men and women were taken into custody while allegedly transporting the illicit substances.

ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects were intercepted while travelling from Beitbridge with the contraband.

Dagga hidden to evade detection

According to police, the suspects had concealed the dr¥gs in a manner intended to avoid detection.

“The ZRP has busted a dr¥g peddling syndicate comprising men and women who were arrested while allegedly trafficking approximately 200 kilogrammes of dagga and other illicit substances,” Nyathi said.

“The suspects were intercepted while travelling from Beitbridge with the contraband cleverly packaged to resemble blankets in order to evade detection.”

Police warn traffickers

Authorities said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat dr¥g trafficking and substance @buse across the country.

Police reiterated that law enforcement agencies will continue intensifying operations targeting individuals involved in illegal dr¥g activities.

“The ZRP reiterates that there is no going back in the fight against dr¥g trafficking and substance @buse,” Nyathi said.

“All individuals involved in the illegal production, transportation and distribution of dr¥gs will be arrested and brought before the courts without fear or favour.”

Growing crackdown on dr¥gs

Zimbabwean authorities have recently stepped up operations against dr¥g syndicates amid growing concern over substance @buse, particularly among young people.

Police say investigations into the Beitbridge case are continuing and more arrests may follow.
