Consumers in Zimbabwe have called for stronger enforcement against counterfeit goods as the country joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Consumer Rights Day.
The global event, observed on 15 March each year, promotes consumer protection, product safety and fair business practices. This year’s theme is “Safe Products and Confident Consumers.”
A snap survey among shoppers revealed mixed views about product quality in the market. While some consumers acknowledged improvements in product safety, many expressed concern over the continued circulation of counterfeit goods.
Some shoppers said stronger monitoring and enforcement were needed to protect buyers from unsafe or fake products.
“The products we have in our markets, depending on which retailer you go to, are significantly safer for us. The issue of counterfeit goods is something that the government should look into because when you go downtown, most products are not the original ones,” some consumers said.
Consumer Protection Efforts
Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ), Rosemary Mpofu, said strengthening product safety systems is critical to protecting consumers.
“In a market that is rampant with counterfeit products, it is crucial to understand the importance of product safety to fight malpractices by businesses and protect the consumer,” Mpofu said.
Authorities say counterfeit goods remain a challenge in Zimbabwe, often entering the market through smuggling and other illegal trade channels.
Government Policy Response
Minister of Industry and Commerce Mangaliso Ndlovu said government is working to strengthen consumer protection systems.
In a statement, Ndlovu said Zimbabwe continues to face challenges related to counterfeit goods, smuggling and unfair business practices.
He said the government is implementing the Consumer Protection Policy 2026–2030, which aims to strengthen consumer rights and improve oversight of goods sold in the market.
The policy seeks to enhance product safety standards, promote fair trade practices and improve enforcement mechanisms.
Zimbabwe’s main commemorations for World Consumer Rights Day will be held in Masvingo on 18 March.
