Zimbabwean billionaire Simon Rudland, co-owner of Gold Leaf Tobacco Corporation, has denied fabricated claims circulating on the social media platform X that portray him as a financier of political opposition against President Emmerson Mnangagwa's administration — accusations sources say emerged after he declined extortion demands framed as party project funding requests.
The Campaign and Its Origins
Anonymous accounts used artificial intelligence-generated material to falsely link Rudland to the Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF), led by former Finance Minister Tendai Biti, and to allege coordination with former Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere. Sources familiar with the matter said ZANU-PF (Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front) apologists launched the campaign after Rudland refused to comply with funding demands disguised as contributions to party initiatives.
Rudland said: "I generally don't respond to social media, however it is both disheartening and unacceptable to find my name being mentioned in conspiracy theories that are baseless and evidently orchestrated to undermine my professional reputation."
Rudland's Business Profile
Rudland's portfolio spans tobacco, mining, construction, and logistics. Gold Leaf Tobacco Corporation employs more than 30,000 people and his holdings are valued at more than US$1 billion. He is described by business associates as a supporter of government economic development programmes.
Broader Pattern of Intimidation
ZANU-PF activist Talent Rusere separately filed court action to block Biti and attorney Fadzai Mahere from participating in legal challenges to the amendment bill. Constitutional lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, who is also challenging the bill through the courts, was recently attacked by unknown individuals.
The smear campaign against Rudland coincides with heightened tensions over Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, which proposes eliminating direct presidential elections and extending current terms by two years to 2030. Rudland has not taken a public position on the bill.
