The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League is set for an early-season blockbuster as traditional football giants Dynamos and Highlanders renew their historic rivalry at Rufaro Stadium this Sunday.
Popularly known as the Battle of Zimbabwe, the clash remains one of the most anticipated fixtures in domestic football, drawing strong interest from supporters across the country.
Although it arrives early in the 2026 campaign, the encounter is expected to inject excitement into the league as both teams continue rebuilding their squads during a period of intense competition from financially stronger clubs.
Dynamos Seek Momentum After Opening Win
Dynamos go into the fixture buoyed by their 2–1 comeback victory over TelOne at Ascot Stadium last weekend.
The result helped restore confidence within the Harare giants’ camp after a difficult pre-season that included a heavy 5–0 defeat to Scottland in the Castle Challenge Cup.
Head coach Genesis Mangombe believes Sunday’s clash will present a different challenge, particularly because both teams have undergone significant changes in personnel and technical staff.
“Yes, it’s a big game for us,” Mangombe said.
“If we compare the two teams, we have assembled a new squad and Highlanders have also assembled a new squad and technical team.
“So there are many things both teams will have to worry about, but a derby remains a derby and we must approach it in high spirits.”
Mangombe also acknowledged the pressure of playing at Rufaro Stadium in front of passionate supporters.
“The ground will be fully packed and our supporters always want to win. We will do our best to win this game,” he said.
Bosso Aim to Improve After Opening Draw
Highlanders, now coached by Zimbabwe football legend Benjani Mwaruwari, will also be seeking to make a statement early in the season.
Bosso opened their campaign with a 1–1 draw against Bulawayo Chiefs at Barbourfields Stadium, needing a late penalty to salvage a point in the Bulawayo derby.
The Sunday encounter will provide an early test of Mwaruwari’s leadership as he continues shaping the Highlanders squad.
The two teams last met only a month ago in the Jairos Jiri Charity Cup, a pre-season fixture played at Barbourfields Stadium.
Highlanders won that match 1–0, but both teams acknowledge that competitive league encounters often produce very different outcomes.
New Signings Boost Dynamos Squad
Dynamos have strengthened their squad with several foreign players as they attempt to rebuild competitiveness in the league.
The new additions include Malawian midfielder Stanley Billiat, Congolese attacker Isaac Landu, Ghanaian defender Christopher Nakai Netty, and Cameroon Under-23 goalkeeper Idrissou Nfor Finia.
Billiat has already attracted attention from Dynamos supporters following his performance during the win over TelOne.
Mangombe said the arrival of the new players has increased competition within the squad.
“The foreign players have given us an added advantage in terms of competition within the team and also provide more options when selecting the best starting line-up,” he said.
Derby Stakes Remain High
Despite changing dynamics within the domestic league, the rivalry between Dynamos and Highlanders continues to hold a special place in Zimbabwean football.
The fixture carries enormous bragging rights for supporters and remains one of the most watched matches on the local football calendar.
With both teams eager to establish momentum early in the season, Sunday’s showdown is expected to deliver another intense chapter in one of Zimbabwe’s greatest sporting rivalries.
